The housing stock

Galt is built around one of Ontario's most intact 19th-century downtowns. Main Street and Water Street run along the Grand River, lined with limestone and granite commercial blocks that date to the town's era as a mill and manufacturing centre. The former Southworks foundry lands south of the core have been redeveloped as the Gaslight District, a mixed-use project that added condo towers and event space beside the heritage industrial buildings. Climb west out of downtown onto Dickson Hill and the stock turns residential: brick and stone Victorians, some Edwardian infill, mature trees, and irregular lots on streets like Blenheim Road and North Square. East Galt, across the river, carries a similar century-home character at generally smaller scale, mixed with wartime and postwar housing as you move toward Elgin Street and Dundas Street. Further from the core, Galt behaves like most of Cambridge: 1960s-to-1980s subdivisions of bungalows and two-storeys, then 1990s-and-later tract housing toward the city's edges, with newer townhouse blocks filling remaining parcels. The result is one of the widest built-form ranges in Waterloo Region inside a single neighbourhood name: stone century homes, modest postwar streets, and new-build condos within a few minutes of each other. Flood mapping along the Grand is a practical consideration for some low-lying streets near the river.
